Band Of The Week – My Terrible Friend

Nataly Dawn from PomplamooseMusic‘s latest collaboration is a band/duo with Lauren O’Connell going by the name of My Terrible Friend. PompalmooseMusic mostly do awesomly unusual cover songs (like Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) by Beyonce) and My Terrible Friend can do covers too (Holy Roller Novocaine by Kings of Leon) but it’s one of their new original tunes that I really love; The Daylight Here is such a nice tune!

Band Of The Week – Mumford & Sons

I know that I’ve used Mumford & Sons before but their T in the Park performance of The Cave is just too awesome to ignore. Similarly I’ve used Frightened Rabbit a ton of times before but how could I not mention The Loneliness & The Scream (starts at 4:45). Stunning.

Band Of The Week – Meursault

Meursault are one of those bands that seem to be on every second gig poster in Edinburgh – and are clearly working really hard – but they’ve taken a long time to start getting real coverage… but with a slot at T in the Park I think this might be their year. I’ve heard them play live twice but their sound has definitely evolved over the past few years. A Fair Exchange (and the video that accompanies it) are stunning. Enjoy.

Band Of The Week – Langhorne Slim

Langhorne Slim (the lead singer of the band Langhorne Slim) has a nice chilled out acoustic sound but it’s the warm fuzzy, bluesy, Hammond organy sound that Langhorne Slim (the band) brings to these songs that really makes songs like “Say Yes” and “I Love You, But Goodbye” sound special. Sounds like: Sunny mornings in Summer.
Influenced by: The Beatles, The Flaming Lips and Oasis. Probably.
Their new stuff sounds cool but their MySpace is filled with slightly older gems like Nothing I Can Do. (The video below is of the original followed by the low-fi acoustic version complete with barking).

Amanda Palmer has recently split from her record label (following in the footsteps of influential bands like Radiohead, OKGo and Nine Inch Nails) and her next album, the first as a free agent, is going to be a covers album. Covers of Radiohead songs. On ukulele. That all sounds pretty random but to give you faith you need to go and listen to her first “single” – Idioteque. Enjoy.

Pixelh8 is one of those dudes that’s so talented I wonder when he finds the time to sleep. The tunes are of the variety “chip” and, as such, probably aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but I urge you to go and listen to “You Were Born To Save The World” – it’s just such a beautifully orchestrated little tune that I can totally imagine soundtracking an epic scene in a movie. After that you’ll want to check out the video of Pixelh8 chip tune busking with his mini amp and his Nintendo DS (t’s pretty cool).
