Dust Covered Carpet – Pretty Things Happen

Brightside are a 5-piece band from Edinburgh with some pretty catchy tunes and an EP coming out soon… follow their chat on Facebook. My favourite tune is “The Girl With The Red Lipstick” [Video/MySpace].

beneath us, the waves is a project of Warsaw-based, Scottish musician and composer, . Neil’s music is a glacial snowdrift of ambient soundscapes and haunting, elegant modern-classical compositions. It sounds like Ólafur Arnalds and Jóhann Jóhannsson conspiring in secret with Jónsi & Alex and Library Tapes and draws further influences from Sigur rós, Mogwai, Arvo Pärt and Fryderyk Chopin.

Neil Milton/Beneath us, the waves make some stunning ambient, ethereal, Sigur Rós-esque sounding tunes. I’m not going to tell you which ones to listen to, just hit MySpace and see what you find.

This week my band of the week is Weezer. It’s great to hear that one of my most favourite bands are back with a brand new album. Trainwrecks is one of the album highlights. Enjoy!

I’ve been waiting for a while to have Come On Gang as my band of the week… but the wait is over – Come On Gang’s first single is out now!! Fortune Favours The Brave is so catchy you’ll be humming it at bus stops and the video is awesome too – can you name any other band with a tiger fighting a dinosaur in their first music video? No, I didn’t think so. You can even get a free copy if you sign up to their mailing list. Enjoy.

My band of the week may sound a bit like Beirut (I think it might be the trumpets and the style of the lead vocals) but that doesn’t stop Fanfarlo‘s first album Reservoir from being any less enchanting. The Walls Are Coming Down is a particularly sweet tune. Enjoy.

The National have been around for a while (and the song Fake Empire has been awesome from the word go) so if you haven’t listened to them yet you better do it now. Here’s Bloodbuzz Ohio from their stunning new album, High Violet.

Just when if felt like it had been a long time since I’d mentioned Frightened Rabbit they’ve gone and do a stunning 14 track “acoustic” session which the nice people at Revision3 recorded. Please do watch it all – it’s really good fun. Have a nice weekend.

City and Colour are one of those bands that I can’t believe I’ve taken so long to discover; they tick all the boxes for me with their nice chilled acoustic sounds, soaring vocals and sweet sounding harmonies. I tried to describe them but the best I could come up with was that they sound like what I’d imagine Bon Iver joining up with Frightened Rabbit to do acoustic covers of The Gaslight Anthem would sound like.
